How these estimates work
Per portion and for your whole batch. These are ingredient-based estimates, not laboratory-tested nutrition facts. Optional ingredients are excluded.
Estimated nutrition counts all measured ingredients and oil. Reference-food proxies and ranges remain; brands and cooking losses vary. Not laboratory analysis or a medical recommendation.
USDA FoodData Central references. Brands, food varieties, preparation and portion size change the result. Added sugars assume plain, unsweetened ingredients; for prepared breads and sauces, a range shows zero to the reference food’s total sugar because the added amount is unspecified.
Ingredients, sources & assumptions
All listed edible food and oil are counted as eaten. Cooking losses and final cooked weight are not measured. Some ingredients use a stated reference food or a proxy for a missing nutrient. No personalized dietary advice.

Let’s make it
Steps at a glance 4 steps
Amounts below match your selected batch. Follow each short step, and use timers as reminders to check the food.
Equipment
Kitchen scale · Saucepan with lid · Steamer · Small saucepan · Knife used by an adult · Fork · Grater used by an adult · Shallow bowls · Spoons
- 1
Cook the rice
An adult puts 160 g dry brown rice and 400 ml water in a saucepan, brings it to a boil, then covers and simmers gently for 30–40 minutes or the package time. If needed, add drinking water to prevent drying. Cook until every grain is tender, then rest covered for 10 minutes. Keep children away from steam and the hot pan.
- 2
Soften the vegetables
An adult finely dices 180 g (about 3 medium carrots, trimmed) carrots and 240 g broccoli into small florets with thin stems. Steam carrots for about 10–12 minutes until easily crushed with a fork; add broccoli for the last 7–8 minutes. Cook 120 g frozen corn in a separate pan following the package directions. Drain. All vegetables should be soft, not crunchy.
- 3
Prepare the garden pieces
Stir 8 g oil and 60 g finely grated cheddar into the hot rice. Spread the portions in shallow bowls and let them cool briefly to a comfortable eating temperature. An adult finely chops or mashes the cooked vegetables for the child’s eating skills, including breaking up corn kernels. Keep the rice loose and spoonable rather than squeezing it into firm balls.
- 4
Build and eat
With an adult beside them, children can use clean spoons to arrange broccoli as trees, carrot pieces as paths and corn as small sunny patches over their rice. No sticks or toothpicks are needed. Serve promptly and seated; the garden is a spoon meal, not food to play with while running. Divide all rice and vegetables equally among the selected portions.

Make it work for you
For kids & different preferences
Children can choose a garden design and arrange safely cooled food with spoons. Adults operate the stove, drain pans, grate cheese and cut vegetables. Match texture to the child: soften and finely chop or mash broccoli and carrot, break up corn kernels, and keep rice moist and loose. Supervise seated eating. Milk is present. Not suitable for every age; this is not infant-feeding advice.
Storage & packed lunches
Cool rice quickly in shallow containers, ideally within 1 hour, and refrigerate at 40°F / 4°C or colder. Never leave out longer than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F / 32°C. Use within 24 hours. Discard partly eaten portions.
Freezing & reheating
Freeze untouched cooked portions promptly for up to 1 month for quality. Reheat thoroughly from frozen or after refrigerator thawing.
Reheat refrigerated rice and vegetables once to 165°F / 74°C throughout, then cool a portion to a safe eating temperature before serving.
If something looks different
Times are guides: use the stated texture and doneness checks. Larger batches need more pan space and time.
