How these estimates work
Per portion and for your whole batch. These are ingredient-based estimates, not laboratory-tested nutrition facts. Optional ingredients are excluded.
Estimate includes all blueberries, peeled apple and lemon flesh with juice, divided into sixteen portions. Reduction removes water only, so batch totals equal the fruit used. Sugars are natural fruit sugars; no sweetener is added. A spread component, not a meal.
USDA FoodData Central references. Brands, food varieties, preparation and portion size change the result. Added sugars assume plain, unsweetened ingredients; for prepared breads and sauces, a range shows zero to the reference food’s total sugar because the added amount is unspecified.
Ingredients, sources & assumptions
All listed edible food and oil are counted as eaten. Cooking losses and final cooked weight are not measured. Some ingredients use a stated reference food or a proxy for a missing nutrient. No personalized dietary advice.

Let’s make it
Steps at a glance 4 steps
Amounts below match your selected batch. Follow each short step, and use timers as reminders to check the food.
Equipment
Kitchen scale · Vegetable peeler · Cutting board and knife · Wide heavy saucepan with lid · Heatproof spatula · Potato masher · Shallow covered containers
- 1
Prepare the fruit
Wash hands and produce. Pick over and rinse 400 g blueberries, discarding stems and soft berries. Peel, core and finely chop 250 g apple. Cut the peel and white pith from the lemon, remove the seeds, finely chop the flesh and weigh 30 g lemon flesh with its juice.
- 2
Cook until the berries burst
Combine all the fruit in a wide heavy saucepan. Cover and cook over medium heat about 5 minutes, stirring once or twice, until the berries burst and release their juice.
- 3
Reduce to a spread
Uncover and simmer briskly 20 to 30 minutes, stirring often and scraping the bottom, mashing the fruit as it softens. Lower the heat as it thickens, because it spatters. It is ready when it has reduced by roughly a third or more and a spatula drawn across the pan leaves a trail that closes slowly.
- 4
Cool and store cold
Spread into shallow containers and cool about 30 minutes; it thickens further as it cools. Cover and refrigerate or freeze within 2 hours of cooking. Use a clean spoon each time.

Make it work for you
For kids & different preferences
Thick and spoonable with soft blueberry skins and tender apple pieces; mash or blend further for a smoother texture. Spread thinly. Children can rinse berries with supervision; adults handle the stove, as the thick fruit spatters. Not age-specific feeding guidance.
Storage & packed lunches
Without added sugar or canning, this spread is perishable. Refrigerate in covered containers at 40°F / 4°C or colder within 2 hours of cooking (within 1 hour above 90°F / 32°C) and use within 3 days. Do not store at room temperature or process as a canned jam.
Freezing & reheating
Freeze in small covered portions with headspace for up to 1 month. Thaw one portion at a time in the refrigerator.
Serve cold or at cool room temperature; no heating needed.
If something looks different
Runny after cooling means it needed longer reduction; return it to the pan and simmer, stirring, a few minutes more. Scorching on the bottom means the heat was too high near the end. Frozen berries release more liquid and may take longer to reduce.
